The main thing I love about shabby chic furniture reconstruction is the capability to make a plain piece into the focal point of the room, by 3 main advantages:
1. Relatively low effort
2. easy to learn technique
3. Low costs of materials

Painting is a wonderful easy way to create an old piece of furniture, or even a newer one, into a piece that holds an inherent charm. Once you master the basic painting skills, you can use your imagination to create furniture's that seem to be made by professionals. Shabby chic look always surprises me as the result looks like the piece was taken out of a magazine.
Shabby-Chic Style: How did it all begin?
Shabby chic is a form of interior design where furniture is either chosen for their age and signs of wear and tear, or new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique.
Shabby chic items are often heavily painted with many layers showing through obviously worn areas. The style is imitated in faux painting using glaze or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Whites and worn or bleached out pastels are favorite colors. The essence of shabby chic style is antique furniture painted white (or another soft pastel color) and distressed at the corners by sanding. (Wikipedia)
If it's an old piece, and the wood is in good quality, you'll want to emphasis this particular quality by keeping the natural look of the wood. If it's a great design (and I'm especially fond of the 60's style furniture), it's about the structure of the piece and here you'll want your reconstruction to emphasis that in the lines defining it's shape.
Even a plain cabinet- for example the one's you buy from DIY stores, can transform into shabby chic look by applying some paint in a special technique we'll learn in a minute, and other increments materials. To create shabby chic look, you have to keep in mind the first rule: god is in the little details. The small details make the whole piece look sharp. Look at this cabinet:
It's easy on the eyes because of a mixture of several factors: the color, the painting technique of the color. The increments and the basic structure: lines that give you a sense of "order" even though the entire piece does not represent a nit design that is clean, or minimalistic. On the contrary: Because of its clean structure, you can go wild with color techniques and increments, and not having it looks tacky.
Another important characteristic for shabby chic furniture are legs. Imagine the cabinet without its legs and you will see how immediately the piece looks "clumsy". The legs always give a subtle feeling to the piece. Once the piece is lifted from the ground it seems lighter and upright. Just like the impact heels have on a woman.
In this pro section coming articles, we'll learn all the secrets to paint shabby chic furniture's in several painting techniques. We'll learn tips for sand washing, cleaning and even how to create a reconstruction plan.
