Remember the Toyota Chinook? - The Little Camper That Helped Start an Industry

About 40 years ago the little camper was born.

Someone at Toyota USA decided that it would be a good idea to provide pickups for use by camper manufacturers. These vehicles were sent out to the camper companies as a cab and chassis unit. They did not have a pickup bed attached. The manufacturer of the camper attached their own camper body onto the chassis of the pickup. This became the basis for the series of campers known as the Toyota motor home.

Constructed in the late 1970s, they were tiny by today's measure.

At first the campers were small, not much bigger than the original pickup body. One of the most common brands of camper of this type at that time was called the Toyota Chinook. This little camper consisted of a fiberglass body attached to the Toyota chassis. It normally had a pop-up roof with a vinyl enclosure.

Inside the camper, the accommodations were quite plain.

Along one side of the body there was a built in galley consisting of a sink and icebox, and a two burner propane cook stove. The other side of the camper was placed a couch which folded out into a double bed. This left a small aisle for standing, dressing, and other activities. Normally the inside of the camper was designed with the cabinets made from the same material as the body of the camper, fiber glass.

These small campers to be in popular with people wanting to travel inexpensively.

The little pickup combined with a camper body made a very economical unit for weekending and vacation travel. This model of RV was very popular with fishermen and hunters or couples who wanted a simple camper that they could park in garage. The use of the pop-up top built into the camper these vehicles would allow the vehicle to fit in a stall in a standard garage.

With the pop-up roof extended, there was limited stand up room inside the camper. This allowed the user to move around without bending over. The daily activities of cooking,getting dressed, and sleeping were all carried out in the warmth and protection of the solid fiber glass body.The limited features of these campers may extended stays a real challenge, but for weekends and brief vacations they were ideal.

One of the major difficulties of this camper was the lack of a bathroom.

For some people this was not a problem as they used the camper as a very comfortable place to sleep while camping in the outdoors. When used at forest service campgrounds or in wilderness areas this was ideal, but for use in crowded campgrounds or RV parks this soon became a problem. Another drawback of this camper was the lack of built-in storage.

While this little camper was ideal for a lot of people it was not quite the best camper for the growing RV market.

Buyers wanted more amenities and features that provided the comfort and convenience of home while on the road. Attracted by the sales of the Toyota Chinook type of camper, RV manufacturers began to design larger and more comfortable Toyota motor homes.

Pocket Hole Jig - What Is It?

If you're a keen woodworker then you've probably made your share of cabinets and similar types of projects. It can be very satisfying, you enjoy the woodworking part, and maybe you even designed the piece yourself. Then when it's finished you get the satisfaction of having something useful in the home or workshop and you might even get the pleasure of friends and family admiring your work and complimenting you.

So what's the biggest drawback to all this fun? For me it has to be making joints, good strong accurate joints can be a pleasure to look at but a pain in the neck to make. Now I can do a lot of good work by eye, if I think it looks right then it usually is. What can I say, it's a gift.

But when it comes to working out the dimensions for all these joints that's a different story. I can use a tape measure or a rule but just don't mention math, it gives me the heebee jeebies. I know all about measure twice cut once to make sure things right but I can break out in a sweat when it comes to doing the math for the joints on a set of frame doors.

And don't forget the joy of gluing and clamping up the joints, I usually wish I'd got at least one extra arm. It doesn't matter if you're using mortise and tennon joints or dowel joints, they can be tricky to get right.

This is where the pocket hole jig comes to the rescue, it makes the job so easy it's nothing short of incredible. You don't need to do any difficult math to get your wood joints accurate you dot need an octopus for an assistant or a dozen assorted clamps to hold the joint while the glue dries, you don't even need glue!

All you need is your pieces of timber cut to the correct size, and wee can all manage that, your pocket hole jig, the special drill bits that come with it and the right screws. That's it, it's so simple. You just put your piece of wood in the jig fit the special drill bit into your drill and away you go, the hole you drill will make a pilot hole for the screw and a larger hole to enable you to tighten the screw, then you simply screw the pieces of wood together, no glue needed and yet you get a strong tight joint And you can conceal the screw from sight by fitting wood plugs into the pocket holes.

Common Do-It-Yourself Mistakes in Home Repair

People are truly creative when it comes to home repairs. We will find ways to fix a leaky faucet or some duct work in innovative ways with household items, or we develop creative wiring methods to provide electricity where we need it. Truly concerning is our ability to repair items in such a way that can cause serious harm. For this reason, I would like to mention some things that I see all to frequently, so you can avoid these mistakes.

Note: There is not enough room here to go into the details of how to accomplish these tasks. Besides there are several good books, which have easy to follow steps and diagrams. I have found repair manuals like these in used book stores, but they are not too bad at other places. These volumes are great for homeowners who want to tackle projects themselves.

Extension cord outlets seem to be a favorite means of delivering power to equipment outside. I have seen small extension cords cut in half and passed through the wall where there is a small opening. The cords are then spliced back together with tape, so water can get in and short out the circuit. Most cords of this size are not rated to handle the type of usage you would be planning to handle, so they start to overheat, and the casing will melt away. If you need an outlet for Christmas lights, I recommend installing an outlet in your soffit. The soffit is the board under the overhang of the roof. Find a junction box in the attic from which you can run a wire. Look for where a rafter comes down to attach the outlet box to it. The outlet does not need to be GFCI in this location, but it would be a good idea to go ahead with a GFCI outlet here. Attach wires to rafters and joists with wire clips. If you need an outlet for tools outside, the easiest method would be running the wire through a conduit tube to the outlet box. Here you would definitely need a GFCI outlet with a cover. Make sure that the conduit and the box are securely attached to the wall. Any wiring running outside the building needs to be secured with clips every few feet. The other major wiring problem I see is using the wrong junction box, particularly with no cover.

Putting globs of silicone seems to be the common solution to a plumbing leak. The really amazing thing is that most plumbing parts which need to be replaced for a leak are not really that expensive, but here is the catch, you need to buy the correct part. If you know the manufacturer of your fixture, finding a replacement part is much easier, but I have found that going to a good hardware store you will find some one to help you with finding the right part. Gaskets, seals, and o-rings eventually fail with age. However, sometimes pipes or tubes are knocked about causing damage to their threads or to their walls. In this case you will want to buy a new one. Some mysterious leaks in the bathroom are from the wax seal under the toilet. Trying to make some part that looks similar fit and do the job will cause more issues.

About silicone, one type of silicone is not always acceptable for every use. Look at the labeling to ensure you are getting the product that will work. The best product might not be a silicone. There are latex and polyurethane caulks which are far superior to silicone for an application. Latex caulks are great for paint jobs, and polyurethane caulks are great for outdoor situations.

Duct tape is not for ducts. If you need to repair a duct in the attic, use the shiny tape which is meant for this job. Also a duct is not a duct, meaning that there are actually several different types of duct, so you need to make sure that you are installing the right one for the application. Ducts for different uses are not designed to attach each other.

The last common mistake involves fasteners. Screws, nails, and bolts come in different sizes and types. There are special nails for attaching roof shingles, and there are specific screws for drywall. We like to use what we have on hand (or what we can easily find in the garage or shed), than what is the best fastener for the job. I have seen people nail hinges into the cabinet. What made it worse was the fact that the nails were too long, so you could jab yourself with them inside the cabinet. Some hardware stores sell boxes with a variety of fasteners. This is a great deal if you do not want to buy many different packages. The proper fastener will make the job easier to do (and undo).

Maybe I should say that all of these mistakes come down to planning, preparation, and execution errors. Think about what needs to happen, before you start. Then think about how to correct it if you do need to redo it. (How will they get that nail out of the hinge?) Plan out all of the steps, and you will be fine.

Woodworking - You Can Make Great Wood Projects

A few years ago my wife presented me with a wood project plan for a high bed for my son. She had found these plans in a magazine on woodworking. These were great plans with a desk and shelves under the bed. Up to that point in my life I had only managed to build a small wooden cabinet in my woodworking class in high school, many years ago. Rather than respond with a flat no, which is what I was thinking, I had a look at the plans and asked myself, how can I do this? I knew that I had limited power tools and even less experience and skill. I examined the plans and broke them down into small tasks that were manageable. I realized that the largest obstacle would be accurately cutting the plywood. In fact there is no way I could do that. My mindset was to say, how can I do this, so I looked around for some solution. I found a neighbor who had a great table saw and was more than happy to cut up the plywood according to the plan. In fact he was more than willing to help me out in whatever part of the wood project that I needed. With the plywood cut up the whole project went together very easily, as the remainder consisted in cutting pieces of one by three lumber and screwing gluing and bolting things together. In the end, with a little creative thinking, I got the bed built and I had lots of fun. The really hard part was getting past the idea that I could not possibly do this. As it turns out my son loved it and I had the great feeling of having built it myself. Now 18 years later he has finally moved on to another bed, but I was asked to keep it for the future, and I am not going to speculate on that one!

Decluttering Your Home in Preparation For Selling

In order to sell your house in a buyer's market, you must make your house stand out from the rest. The first way to do this is to clean your house completely. A thorough clean includes decluttering. You can use this time to get rid of clutter that isn't adding anything to your life - other than something to move aside, shove away, or trip over. This will not only enable you to stage your home more efficiently, it will also lessen the stress of having "mess" to clear away before every home showing.

Take small steps to decluttering. Focus on getting a single area or container decluttered at a time. This could be a counter or a drawer. It doesn't matter as long as you start and do a thorough job on that one space.

Dump everything onto a cleared space and start going through it. One pile is for things that you use and want to keep. The other pile is for things that you don't use and don't need. Be ruthless! The orange juicer that you picked up while on a health kick isn't doing you any good if you use it only once a year. You are probably not going to use the 3-year-old packets of ketchup. While that extra set of measuring spoons will come in handy if your present set get stolen by a thieving baker, they aren't likely to be. Choose a set and let the other go.

After you declutter this small space, put stuff back in an orderly fashion. In some cases, like drawers, you may find that an organizer keeps your things easily separated and accessible.

Lather, rinse, repeat. Do this with all the areas you need to de-clutter. It's best to set up some kind of schedule or plan, so you have a clear idea of what you're doing and when it's time to stop. Decluttering is a thankless task and it's easier to do if you know that you only have one bookshelf to do.

It's not enough to throw stuff out/give stuff away. You need a strategy to deal with the stuff that is going to come in. "A place for everything and everything in its place" is not just an old cliche - it's good sense.

Papers, for instance, should have their own folder. You can purchase an inexpensive file cabinet or file folder to keep track of your important papers. Papers that need to be out for whatever reason should be stored in an In/Out box, which you can buy cheaply or make out of things you already have. ASAP those papers should be filed away, out of sight.

Books need to have their own storage system. Shelves are the usual method, but boxes and drawers can also be utilized to organize books and keep them from contributing to clutter.

Toys have a home in the toy box/basket/hamper. Children's games and activities can also find a home here or on specially designated shelves. Start training your children now to put things away after they are done playing with them. Conduct a family "sweep" every day, where you spend 10 minutes straightening things up and putting things away.

Keep a box for things-that-aren't-used-often-but-are-used-often-enough-to-keep. Store this box away and see if you really use those things that often. If you find that you haven't opened the box in a year, reconsider keeping them.

Look around your house and visualize it as you want to see it staged. Remove everything that interferes with that vision. It may be helpful for you to rent temporary storage so that the items that you do wish to keep can be safely stored away from the house. You could also use this to determine if you really miss these items or whether you'll be glad to have them back when you move.

As you gradually come closer to your goal, you will not only have staged your home as you want it, you will have removed unnecessary things from your life. This also helps you deal with the stress of selling your home and moving.

15 Point Decluttering Checklist - Do a Serious Decluttering and Organizing Job Around the House!

Many people experience during a certain time of year the desire to do a serious decluttering. Perhaps they want to start fresh before a new season begins, or perhaps an event occurs that sparks that yearning for a tidy, uncluttered house. Whatever their reasons may be, they know they have to get busy with a serious decluttering and organizing job around the house.

For most people, the best results occur if they follow some sort of plan for their decluttering and organizing job. Many people work well with checklists, so here is a 15 point decluttering checklist. Begin with these and then take it from there!

Sort through bills and file appropriately in filing cabinet or other organized system. Throw out (recycle) all outdated flyers and catalogues. Remove outdated photographs and cards received from acquaintances that cover your bulletin board and/or fridge. They won't notice. Remove all random utensils from the utensils drawer and get rid of ones you never use. Attack your shoe closet! How many pairs of black dress shoes do you need? Sort through linens and towels and get rid of old sets that you never use. Throw out old or wrongly colored make-up that you never use. Sort through jewelry cabinet looking for broken items, or pieces you don't wear or don't like. Sell or dispose of them.

A decluttering checklist for a good decluttering and organizing job like the one above is only a place to start. Decluttering and organizing your house will be a challenge, no doubt. But, if you put the effort in and simply get to work by crossing items off your checklist, you will be surprised at how great your house starts to look!

There is just something about a baby food jar that makes you want to prolong its usefulness. Its stout cuteness spurs the imagination. If you have children, there is a good chance you also have a stash of empty baby food jars hidden somewhere. Here are several fun craft ideas using empty baby food jars, so you can finally justify keeping them all this time.

Makes a great storage containers for individual colors or types of beads, buttons, and other crafting tools. Make sure the jars are clean and dry and fill with craft tools of your choice. They are pretty enough to store on an open shelf.

Candle Holders
Makes a great candle holders for tea lights or votive candles. You can also make candles from hot beeswax, melted crayons, or melted candle wax scavenged from used candles by pouring it into a baby food jar over a suspended wick. Tie the wick to a heavy washer on one end and a toothpick on the other end. Rest the toothpick over the opening of the jar with the wick and washer dangling inside. The wick should be just long enough for the washer to lie flat and the wick to remain taut.

Jar Gardens
Make a jar garden with baby food jars. You'll need a small amount of clay or florist foam, silk flowers, glue, and a small swatch of fabric. Unscrew the cap from a clean, dry baby food jar. Glue the clay or florist foam to the lid. Arrange tiny silk flowers in a design on the foam. Screw the jar onto the cap, being careful to get all the flowers inside the jar. Glue or tie a square of fabric around the jar lid for a pretty presentation.

Empty baby jars make great baby toys. You can make shakers or sound makers by filling the baby food jars with different items. Try rice in one, nuts and washers in another, beads in another, and more with pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters. These toys are pretty enough to be displayed. Take care to always supervise children when they are using these toys. Baby food jars are made of glass and can break, and many of the fillers are choking hazards.

Can make a cute dispensers for salt, pepper, cinnamon-sugar, and homemade spice blends. With a drill press or awl, poke holes in the jar lid. Fill with desired spice, and screw lid and jar together tightly. Try garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper for a great steak seasoning. You can also use this kind of dispenser as a glitter shaker.

Air Freshener
Poke holes in the jar lid with a drill press or awl. Fill jar with potpourri, room freshener gel, or essential oil and water. Try lemon and grapefruit essential oils for the kitchen, lavender and lemon essential oils for the bedroom, and rose potpourri with rose oil instead of a sachet in your linen cabinet or clothes drawers.

Here's how to make an innovative gift out of a baby food jar. You'll need a strong water-proof glue, large grain glitter, water, and a toy or object that is small enough to fit inside the baby food jar. It needs to have a flat surface that can sit flush with the baby food jar lid. Glue the object to the baby food jar lid and let dry for several hours. Add 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of glitter to the baby food jar. Fill the baby food jar with water, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Put glue around the inside edge of the jar lid and screw lid on, carefully inserting the toy. Flip over the jar and you'll see glitter "snow" falling around your toy inside the globe.
